The 'Candle in the Wind' singer - who wed the Canadian filmmaker in December 2005 - was smitten with his future spouse the first time they met and took him out for dinner the next day and afterwards they spent the night together.
He said: "I was attracted to David immediately. He was very well dressed, very shy. The next night we had dinner. After it, we consummated our relationship. We fell in love very quickly."
The pair met during a dinner party at Elton's house in 1993, after the pop star begged a friend to introduce him to new group of people.
He explained: "In 1993 I went back to my house in Windsor for a while. I wanted meet new people so I rang up a friend in London and said, 'Could you please rattle some new people together for dinner here Saturday?' "
Elton also revealed he and David write love notes to each other every week, to keep the romance in their relationship alive.
He told Parade magazine: "Every Saturday for 16 years, we've sent each other a card, no matter where we are in the world, to say how much we love each other."
The 62-year-old musician believes the secret behind their long-lasting love is their ability to discuss all aspects of their relationship, including their sex life - something which Elton had never been comfortable with before.
He said: "We've never been jealous. We talk about the sexual side of things, things that normally would have frightened me before."
